Keyword Tools are a group of tools that provide analysis and reporting on the use of keywords or phrases on your (or your competitors) website. They are a vital set of tools in terms of optimising your website for high search engine ranking and also for analyzing your competitor’s websites.
Keyword tools comprise such tools as:-
1) Keyword Density Checker – this tool extracts lists of keywords or phrases from a website and calculates how often they occur – this is known as keyword density. This is a vital characteristic to understand as it has a high impact on how your site ranks in the search engines. Also very useful to use to analyze your competitor’s websites to find out how they managing to get high rankings i.e. what words and phrases are they using and at what density. It is also useful to check that your keyword density is not too high as many search engines will penalize this (it is known as keyword stuffing or keyword spamming).
2) Keyword Extractors – as the name suggests this tool extracts lists of keywords from a website in a form that is easily exportable. This tool is useful for generating ideas around which keywords or phrases you should choose to optimize for – particularly if it is used to extract lists of keywords from a high ranking but competing site.
3) Keyword Rich Domain Finder – this tool finds websites that have high keyword densities for the chosen keywords or phrases. The list of sites found by this tool can be an invaluable source of data for your keyword research and also a very useful piece of competitor analysis.
4) Keyword suggestion generator – another great tool for when you are generating your lists of keywords and phrases on which to base your pages or site. The Keyword suggestion generator tool will normally produce lists of keywords or phrases that are related to your seed keyword, this is usually in easily exportable format so it can easily be moved into other tools for further analysis.
5) Search engine keyword position / rank checker – this tool usually comes in three different varieties, these varieties are :-
a) Multiple Keyword Search Engine Position Checker Tool – this tool will check the ranking of a site for multiple chosen keywords. It is useful for checking your ranking for the keywords you are trying to optimize for in order to determine if your Search Engine Optimization (SEO) efforts are paying off.
b) Multiple Website Search Engine Position Checker Tool – this tool will check the ranking of a list of multiple websites for a chosen keyword or phrase. A useful tool to check how you are ranking compared to other sites in your chosen area.
c) Search Engine Rank checker – checks the ranking of a website for a chosen keyword across multiple search engines. A useful tool to see if your SEO efforts are working on more than one search engine.
As can bee seen from the above descriptions of the various keyword tools they are invaluable for any serious SEO campaign and no serious web marketer should be without access to them.
Link tools are a broad category of tools that cover the discovery, analysis and reporting on of a range of website links (e.g. backlinks, outbound links, internal site links etc). They can be used to check which sites are linking to your (or your competitors !) website, if people are linking back to you or simply to verify your own internal linking structure is working correctly. They are essential tools in your SEO campaign as backlinks are a vital contributory factor to your sites search engine ranking.
So what types of tools fall under the category of “link tools”?, well here are a few examples:
1) Link Analyzer – analysis and reports on all the outbound and internal links for a site. An important tool to check which sites you are linking to (to help ensure you are not linking to bad neighbourhoods) and to help verify that your internal linking structure is sound.
2) Backlink checker – checks backlinks to your site (or your competitors !), a great deal to find out who is linking to you (or perhaps even more importantly who are linking to sites you are competing with !). As backlinks are the vital life blood of search engine ranking this is a must use tool.
3) Link extractor – in essence this tool extracts outbound links from a site into a document, can be useful to provide data for further analysis.
4) Link popularity checker – like a backlink checker but across multiple search engines, again a very useful tool for SEO.
5) Link suggestion generator – find sites that are linking to other sites based on the keyword you are interested in e.g. you can find sites that are linking on “SEO” or “Asthma” or indeed any other term you may be interested in. The obvious power of such a tool is to pinpoint sites that are already giving outbound links for the exact terms you are interested in. In addition to this these links are using relevant terms in the anchor text (which is important for SEO) as this is how they are discovered by the toll in the first place.
6) Multiple Back link checker – in essence exactly the same as a backlink checker tool but which checks multiple search engine sat once (as opposed to focussing on just one search engine for the results)
7) NoFollow Finder – this tool finds sites that are using no follow tags in their links. This is useful to find out as links that use the no follow tag are not as useful for seo purposes. This is particularly relevant if you have purchased backlinks or are involved in reciprocal linkage schemes.
8) Reciprocal Link Checker – these tools check that sites that say they are linking to you actually are linking. Again these are useful tools if you have purchased backlinks or are involved in reciprocal linkage schemes as you can easily verify that the links are in place.
In summary link tools offer a range of useful functions for finding and checking a range of link types and should be in the toolbox of everyone who is interested in SEO.
What are authority link tools ?, in order to establish what an authority link tool is you first have to define what an authority link is. An authority link is a backlink from a website that has standing in the search engines (these are usually .edu or .gov domains).
So why are links from authority sites important? – In a nutshell because they help with your search engine ranking (perhaps more so than any other types of backlink). So in order to start obtaining such backlinks the obvious place to start is to by determining which authority sites are already linking out to other websites. Even more critically it is important to determine which authority sites are linking to sites that are in the same subject areas as yours (i.e. linking to your competitors!). This is where authority link tools come into play.
So what type of authority link tools are available for you to use, typically these tools include such things as :-
.edu backlink checker – checks for backlinks from .edu websites. Typically these tools will require you to enter a domain to check (either your own or more usually a competitive website – particularly one that is outranking you in the search engines !), they will then report back which .edu authority sites are linking back to the specified domain. It is useful to discover such information for a competing domain so that you can replicate their backlink pattern and hence replicate their success.
.gov backlink checker – exactly same in principle as .edu backlink checkers but do their checking against .gov domains rather than .edu (obvious really). Used in exactly the same way as the .edu tools
DMOZ backlink checker – again exactly the same as both .edu and .gov but checking for links from the DMOZ (Directory Mozilla) ODP (Open Directory Project). DMOZ is important because it is the largest and most well respected web directory on the internet. Not only is it important to get your site listed in DMOZ but it is also important to get backlinks from sites that are listed in DMOZ.
Yahoo backlink checker – just like the DMOZ backlink checker but working against the Yahoo Directory (important note – the Yahoo directory is NOT the same as the Yahoo search engine – similar to DMOZ it is a human edited directory). Again it is doubly important to check these backlinks to make sure that your site is listed in the Yahoo directory and to identify sites that may (or already do) link back to your site.
The above tools may be used singularly but also can be used in combination, indeed many sites offering such tools often combine them together and refer them to as authority link tools, authority link checkers or multiple authority link checkers.
They can be very powerful tools in your SEO armoury and should be used as a standard part of you rlink building campaigns.

The term “click here” is a generic term that appears all over the internet – if you do a Google search for it yields 1.7 billion results (yes billion !), even if you do an exact search it still yields 972 million results. I am sure you would agree these are astronomical results and I bet you are now wondering which site ranks number one for this term ? – if you cannot be bothered to check then I will let you know right now – it is the adobe acrobat download page – I bet you did not think that would be the one.
So why, other than passing interest, would anyone be interested in such a fact ?. The answer to this question is anyone who is interested in search engine optimization (SEO) – if I tell you that the top ranking page for “click here” does not contain the term “click here”, it does not appear in the pages meta tags nor do either of the words even appear individually on the page then it may alter some of your thinking about SEO.
So after all that is has been written about on page optimization (keyword density, use of meta tags, use of tags to highlight key phrases etc) we find a clear example of a top ranking site that has NO on page optimization at all, it completely disregards all the accepted wisdom about on page optimization and still ranks top out of 1 billion results.
So how has this been achieved ?. The answer is simple – backlinks. There are literally hundreds of thousands of sites that link to the adobe acrobat download page. Equally importantly as the number of backlinks is the quality of the links – many of these backlinks come from authority sites ( .edu, .gov etc).
What is particularly interesting is that this quantity of links has probably been built organically – i.e. by people wanting to link to the site rather than been requested or encouraged to do so. And why have they done this? – Because the site has something unique, useful or interesting to offer. This principle is a good one to bear in mind when developing your linking strategy – what am I offering that is unique, useful or interesting and that people will WANT to link to ?
This example of a high ranking site seems to go against all perceived wisdom on site ranking i.e. it seems to suggest that on page optimization has no effect on ranking what so ever. Whilst this does appear to be true in this case what we are probably seeing is the sheer scale of high quality links to the site far outweighing any possible on page optimization to the point where it is irrelevant. However this would probably not hold true for the vast majority of sites who do not have these vast quantities of backlinks. In these cases the on page optimization will still affect ranking and therefore still has to be taken care of.
This is a very powerful demonstration of how effective backlinks are in affecting search engine ranking. In fact it seems to point to the fact that backlinks are the primary determinator of page ranking, with on page optimization trailing behind.
Marketing your online business can be a huge part of your budget especially when you’re first starting out. Finding ways to get your name in front of your customer that doesn’t cost a fortune will help you draw sales while you’re working on getting ranked in the search engines.
Below are the top five ways to market your business on the internet. The ideas listed are not only inexpensive but are highly effective as well. However, before you even consider using one of these strategies, there are two things you must first do.
The first is to write a formal marketing plan. If you’re getting close to opening your business, a marketing plan should already be done as part of your company’s business plan. However, it’s true that many who start online businesses fail to write a business plan. If this is the case, just be sure to at least get your marketing plan formalized before you start doing business. Getting your marketing plan thought through and documented is the minimum you should do for your business. When writing your marketing plan, consider the who, what, when, and how you will do your selling and get your brand in front of your customer. Then decide which of the following strategies you will implement in that plan and explain how you plan to carry out those strategies.
The other thing you need to consider is search engine optimization. It is essential to learn how to optimize your website so it will eventually get ranked in the top three search engines, Google, Yahoo, and MSN. The sooner you get started with optimizing your site, the faster it will get ranked. Until some of your pages are ranked in the search engines, your traffic will remain minimal. Consider investing in a book, ebook, ecourse, or program of some sort to learn how to optimize your site so you can use the information as you are building it and adding your content. Be sure you’re learning the most recent information because the rules change frequently.
Now on to the Top 5 Ways to Market Your Online Business.
1. Find Your Niche. Imagine trying to sell your product or service to the entire world. Consider the marketing budgets of companies like McDonalds, these are companies that are trying to appeal to everyone. Selling your product or service to a small but focused group of people will allow you the luxury of advertising to a smaller but more interested group of people. Since they are more interested, a higher percentage of the group will buy but you will have spent less money pursuing the smaller group. Once you are successful selling to one niche, if your product or service is appealing to another niche, you can create another website and repeat your success using the same strategies you used on the first website.
2. Link Exchanges. Exchanging links with other websites that have complimentary products or services will not only give you direct traffic from the link but it will also help you with your pursuit to get ranked in the search engines. At the time of this writing, Google is the most widely used search engine, and it’s widely known that they consider the number of links pointing to your website as part of the determination where to rank your website.
3. Write Articles. Writing articles with information that is interesting and useful for your niche market will help you gain traffic to your site. When writing an article, include a resource box at the end of the article that includes information about the author (that’s you) and a link to your website. Then distribute the article to article directories for other website owners to use on their site or in their newsletters and ezines. This does two things, you gain traffic when someone sees your article on another website and clicks your link and you get a link that points back to your site for the search engines to use to rank your site higher.
4. Using a Signature Line in Online Forums. This is a strategy that could be quite time consuming so don’t let it take up huge amounts of your time, however it is quite effective in drawing traffic to your website. Join forums and messageboards that are useful to your niche market and then become part of the community. When you make a post, be sure it’s useful and relevant to the information that is being discussed, then at the bottom of your post, sign-off with your name and little blurb about your company with a link to your website. These are often referred to as “sig lines”. Be sure to read the forum’s guidelines to be sure you’re using the proper etiquette in the forum and to be sure signature lines are allowed. If they are not allowed, do not use this strategy in that forum as it could cause you to be banned from that forum.
5. Start A Newsletter. Having a newsletter is one of the best ways to market to your customers and potential customers. You will need to have a service that will host your list and allow you to send your newsletter. Then you put a sign-up box on your website and your visitors will sign-up. Periodically, you decide how often, you send those who have signed up an email with information that is relevant to your niche. This information could be general info or it could be specifically about your product. To get your visitors to sign-up you can offer a special report, e-course, ebook or anything that would entice them to give you their email address. When you choose the service that will host your email list, be sure they do a double opt-in confirmation of those who subscribe, it’s now the law.
In this article we covered the top five ways to market your website and a couple of things you need to do before you ever even start. Now it’s time to get out there and implement some of these strategies.
