What are Link tools and how do you use them?

Link tools are a broad category of tools that cover the discovery, analysis and reporting on of a range of website links (e.g. backlinks, outbound links, internal site links etc).  They can be used to check which sites are linking to your (or your competitors !) website, if people are linking back to you or simply to verify your own internal linking structure is working correctly. They are essential tools in your SEO campaign as backlinks are a vital contributory factor to your sites search engine ranking.

So what types of tools fall under the category of “link tools”?, well here are a few examples:

1)     Link Analyzer – analysis and reports on all the outbound and internal links for a site. An important tool to check which sites you are linking to (to help ensure you are not linking to bad neighbourhoods) and to help verify that your internal linking structure is sound.

2)     Backlink checker – checks backlinks to your site (or your competitors !), a great deal to find out who is linking to you (or perhaps even more importantly who are linking to sites you are competing with !). As backlinks are the vital life blood of search engine ranking this is a must use tool.

3)     Link extractor – in essence this tool extracts outbound links from a site into a document, can be useful to provide data for further analysis.

4)     Link popularity checker – like a backlink checker but across multiple search engines, again a very useful tool for SEO.

5)      Link suggestion generator – find sites that are linking to other sites based on the keyword you are interested in e.g. you can find sites that are linking on “SEO” or “Asthma” or indeed any other term you may be interested in. The obvious power of such a tool is to pinpoint sites that are already giving outbound links for the exact terms you are interested in. In addition to this these links are using relevant terms in the anchor text (which is important for SEO) as this is how they are discovered by the toll in the first place.

6)    Multiple Back link checker – in essence exactly the same as a backlink checker tool but which checks multiple search engine sat once (as opposed to focussing on just one search engine for the results)

7)     NoFollow Finder – this tool finds sites that are using no follow tags in their links. This is useful to find out as links that use the no follow tag are not as useful for seo purposes. This is particularly relevant if you have purchased backlinks or are involved in reciprocal linkage schemes.

8)     Reciprocal Link Checker – these tools check that sites that say they are linking to you actually are linking. Again these are useful tools if you have purchased backlinks or are involved in reciprocal linkage schemes as you can easily verify that the links are in place.

In summary link tools offer a range of useful functions for finding and checking a range of link types and should be in the toolbox of everyone who is interested in SEO.
